Making Your Trip Enjoyable
Some of the motorways on the Continent are toll roads. Keep some Euros or your credit card to hand when you come to the toll booths. If you prefer to use toll-free roads you can often find quick and easy alternatives. This will give you flexibility to find places to break your journey and these roads also offer a more scenic route. By planning your route with up-to-date maps you can decide whether you want to stay on the motorways or travel cross-country.
You may be travelling long distances so make sure you factor in enough time to allow for breaks. This will give you a chance to stretch your legs, take in some air and give your back a break. On the day you start your journey, make sure that you arrive at the port or Tunnel in good time. It has been found that thirty per cent of motorway accidents are caused by tiredness or stress and many of these take place on the first day. It also appears that most accidents abroad are caused by looking the wrong way when pulling out from being parked.
If you decide to drive on he Autobahns, be aware that the left hand lanes are strictly for overtaking. So for regular driving you should stay in the far-right lane. You only move to the left when you overtake, but make sure that you check your mirrors carefully. Also remember that speeds in mainland Europe are in kilometres per hour and most cars have markings for both kilometres and miles per hour. If not, it is worth taking a conversion table to refer to whilst driving.
You could invest in some new music or an interesting audio book to listen to while on your travels. Make sure you pack plenty of water and quick snacks; it would be cheaper than buying them at the motorway services. Be aware when using rest stops, don’t use them if they seem unsafe. Always lock your doors when you do go inside and always accompany your children to the rest room
